KnowExpensePrivacy Policy

KnowExpense ("we", "us") provides a free bill-splitting and personal finance tracking app. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices.
Information we collect
- Account information — your email address, username, and display name.
- Financial content you enter — expenses, amounts, categories, groups, bills, budgets, and settlement records. These are stored to provide the service; KnowExpense does not connect to your bank and does not move money.
- Receipt images — if you scan a receipt, the image is sent to an optical-character-recognition service to extract line items, and is not retained after processing.
- Usage and diagnostic data — which screens you open, how long you spend on them, and which features you use (see Product analytics below), plus basic error reports to keep the app reliable.
How we use your information
- To operate core features: splitting bills, tracking spending, and sending you the notifications you enable.
- To secure your account and prevent abuse.
- To improve reliability and performance.
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
Product analytics
When you are signed in, the KnowExpense iPhone app, Android app and website record how the app is used so we can fix problems and decide what to improve. This is first-party analytics stored in our own database; it is not used for advertising and is not sold or shared with advertisers.
What is recorded:
- Which screens or pages you open, in what order, and roughly how long each one is open on screen (time while the app is in the background or the tab is hidden is not counted).
- Which features you use, such as adding an expense, scanning a receipt, or exporting a file.
- When you open, background, or leave the app, and whether a sign-in with a password, Google, or Apple succeeded or failed (a general reason only).
- The platform (iPhone app, Android app or website), the app version, a random session identifier, and timestamps.
- General information about your device and location: your country (worked out from your network connection when the record is received; your IP address itself is not stored), your operating system (for example Android or iOS), the type of device (phone, tablet or computer), your browser type on the website, and your language. No city, precise location, device model or operating-system version is recorded.
- These records are linked to your account so that your activity on iPhone, Android and the web can be understood as one journey.
What is never recorded: what you type, amounts, descriptions, names, notes, receipt contents, your email address, passwords, sign-in tokens, or payment card details. We do not record your screen, keystrokes, or form contents. Activity before you sign in is not stored.
Your choice: turn on Don’t share usage analytics in Profile (website) or Profile → Privacy (iPhone and Android apps). Recording stops immediately and anything not yet sent is discarded. Analytics records are kept for up to 400 days and are deleted when you delete your account.
Sharing
Expense and balance information you add to a group is visible to the other members of that group. We use trusted infrastructure providers (for hosting, database, authentication, email, and push notifications) that process data on our behalf under their own security commitments.
Data retention & deletion
You can delete your account at any time from Profile → Advanced → Delete account. This removes your access and deletes your product-analytics records; shared group history may be retained for the other members of those groups.
Security
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and access is restricted by row-level security so you only see your own data and the groups you belong to.
Children
KnowExpense is not directed to children under 13.
